Keto Diet: Yay or Nay?

The latest or maybe just loudest diet obsession fascinating people all over the internet says it will help you lose weight, live longer, and improve your memory is the newly introduced KETO diet. Keto.. keto.. keto.. is a one word certainly is raving over when it comes to diets. Also known as ketogenic diet, its something that mostly half of the population is following but very few it’s pros’ and con’s before even trying it out.

What KETO is actually ?
Keto or ketogeic diet is low or no carbohydrate diet where we force the body to into state where it burn fat for energy than carbohydrates and this is called KETOSIS. This is majorly 75% proteins, 5% carbs and the main source comes from the fats which contribute to 75%. Because it lacks carbohydrates, a ketogenic diet is rich in proteins and fats. It typically includes plenty of fats like Ghee, Olive oil, Peanut oil, Avocados, Egg Yolks, Coconut oil, Butter, Brazil nuts, Pumpkin & Flax Seeds, Sunflower seeds. Proteins: Whole eggs, Pork, Beef, Chicken, Mutton, Fish, Bacon.

Because KETO diet is so restrictive, it is really hard to follow over the long run. Carbohydrates normally account for at least 50% of the typical diet that a normal person takes in. It includes Cauliflower, Cabbage, Tomato, Brocolli, French Beans, Coriander, Asparagus, Cucumber, Spinach, Mushrooms, Okra and few others. Any person who is suffering from kidney disease need to be more careful before starting up this diet as KETO diet impacts directly to your kidney. A ketogenic diet also has been used to improve blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes, at least for a short span of time. During this diet, one can consume frits like Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and can take these sweeteners: Stevia, Sucralose & Splenda. Studies have shown that this diet is not good for people with high cholesterol as during keto a person tends to consume lot of fat which results in high cholesterol.

Apart from sudden hunger, nutritional deficiencies, unrealistic diet, kidney stones, the main side effect is KETO FLU which means the transition from a healthy to a keto diet becomes difficult and people start feeling unwell. The symptoms are brain fog ( lack in concentration ), irritability, dizziness, nausea and headaches. So even though the keto flu is real but one needs to adhere to the diets to get the desired results.
